Overview

The Vovis Center for Research and Advanced Study and Health Professions at Knox College invites applications for the position of a Pre-Health Advising and Student Research Coordinator. Reporting to the director, the coordinator provides support for the Center’s broad agenda to foster student engagement with high-impact learning experiences across the health professions as well as research and creative work. This is a great position for someone looking to gain significant experience in health professions advising as well as other functional areas within higher education. This is a three-year grant-funded position with good possibility of extension. 

Pre-health Responsibilities

In collaboration with the director, the Coordinator provides support for the pre-health program at the College, which includes undergraduate students interested in pursuing a health profession (e.g. medical, dental, nursing, physician assistant, etc). The Coordinator works primarily on supporting exploration of health professions pathways via shadowing, on-campus programming, and advising students who are exploring the health professions.

Essential Pre-health Duties    

  • Advise first year and undecided pre-health students who are exploring which health profession they wish to pursue via 1:1 appointments, email advising, and group advising.

  • Meet with students interested in shadowing opportunities and connect students with local and regional opportunities.

  • Coordinate all aspects of the multiple group shadowing programs run throughout the year by the Vovis Center

  • With the director, develop new partnerships with regional hospitals and clinics in order to grow new possibilities for shadowing, volunteering, and other experiential learning opportunities.

  • Serve as the point person for pre-health programming on campus in terms of marketing, event set-up, and other aspects of implementation.

  • Manage the Pre-Health Google Classroom, the Center’s repository of pre-health resources and information for students.

  • Supervise a student employee who focuses on pre-health.

  • Support new initiatives in the Center as determined by the Director.

Student Research and Advanced Study Responsibilities

In collaboration with the director of the Vovis Center, the Coordinator works to build a culture of student research and creative work on campus. The Coordinator will increase visibility of the Center’s offerings, manage existing programs, and help implement high-profile events, including the Center’s annual research and creative work symposium, HORIZONS.

Essential Duties    

  • Promote the array of funding opportunities for student research via class visits, programming, and email/social media marketing campaigns.

  • In collaboration with the director, implement existing group research programs on campus as well as individual summer programs, such as the Artists, Scholars, Scientists, and Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow (ASSET) program.

  • Support the development and implementation of the Center’s annual research and creative work symposium, HORIZONS.

  • Supervise a student employee who focuses on research and creative work.

  • Support new initiatives in the Center as determined by the Director.

Professional development: Participate regularly in regional, national, or international professional development opportunities and networks. This includes membership in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and the Central Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (CAAHP).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience in counseling, academic advising, student affairs, higher education administration, or related fields such as nonprofit administration strongly preferred.

  • Commitment to the success of students of diverse backgrounds and experiences and to the mission of a diverse educational community.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues in the Vovis Center office and across the College.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing, and administrative skills to interact with students, alumni, staff, faculty, prospective families, and any guests.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, exercise sound decision-making, and understand when to seek additional help and guidance.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze and resolve issues.

  • Keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records and exercise discretion in communication with varied constituencies.

  • Demonstrated computer proficiency and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Zoom (web conferencing), online scheduling and appointment systems (e.g. Handshake, Google Slots), graphic design (Canva), and cloud-based software systems such as Google Workspace, and/or the ability to learn new technologies quickly and efficiently.
