Miami University and the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education seek a pre-health professions advisor to work with students who are pursuing careers in healthcare, including medicine, dentistry, physician associate, and other health professions. This position involves providing academic advising, career counseling, and application support to undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students interested in health professions programs. The advisor will assist students in course selection, extracurricular planning, and professional development while staying informed about trends and requirements in medical and health professions admissions. The McIntyre Pre-health Professions Advisor position is an endowed, full-time, benefit-eligible, on-campus administrative staff position on a ten-month contract, with occasional evening or weekend activities. Typically, the position will run from August 1st to May 31st
Job Description
Duties/Physical Demands:
Provide pre-professional advising and support to undergraduate students enrolled in the Premedical and Pre-health Studies co-major and/or interested in a career in healthcare
Monitor student progress and develop graduation and post-graduation plans in partnership with individual students. Provide information regarding curriculum, policies, procedures, opportunities, and guidelines for academic programs.
Evaluate student needs and provide appropriate resource referral to career, academic, counseling, and student life resources and opportunities.
Teach one credit advising courses on career options and preparation of application materials
Plan health-related on-campus programming and develop resources
Monitor and maintain content for Center webpage
Meet with prospective students and represent the pre-health program at recruiting and orientation events.
Serve as Ex Officio member of the faculty Pre-health Advisory Committee
Serve as a resource for faculty and other professional advisors across the University
Advise and coordinate activities of student pre-health organizations
Develop and maintain professional relationships with Admission staff in medical and other health profession schools
Engage in professional development opportunities through NAAHP and establish and maintain professional relationships with pre-health advisors in other institutions
Other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant/Associate Director
Minimum Qualifications:
Required: Master’s degree, earned by start date.
Consideration will be given to candidates with Master’s in academic advising, higher education administration, college student personnel, psychological counseling, student affairs; or in a biological or physical science; prior experience providing career counseling or advising services in a college/university setting or, in lieu of higher education experience, at least 3 years of career counseling or advising; experience with pre-health advising; experience with pre-health advising; experience working with high ability students; experience working with diverse student populations; understanding of the purpose and advantages of a liberal arts education; excellent organization, technological and collaborative skills; experience with tools such as Learning Management Systems (LMS; e.g., Canvas), Workday, uAchieve, EAB Student Success Collaborative, and transferology.com; excellent written and oral communication skills.
